“How much does a headshot cost in Vancouver?” is the question we hear most, usually followed by “and why does every studio quote something different?” Both are fair. Prices in this city genuinely run from about $125 to $800 or more for an individual session, and the number on its own tells you very little. This guide breaks down what drives the price, what you get at each tier, and how to compare quotes that are structured completely differently.
The short answer
Most professionals in Vancouver end up spending $300 to $500 for a headshot they can use for years — a studio session plus two or three professionally retouched images. Budget options exist around $125–$200, and premium personal-branding shoots run $1,000+. At our downtown Vancouver studio, a headshot session is $350, with retouched images at $50 each.
Why the headshot cost you’re quoted is only half the story
The single most common surprise in headshots pricing is the difference between the session fee and the final image cost.
Most photographers price the shoot and the editing separately. The session fee buys you the studio, the lighting, the photographer’s time and their direction. Retouching — the work that turns a raw frame into a publishable professional portrait — is often billed per image on top.
This isn’t a trick. Retouching is genuinely slow, skilled work, and photographers who bundle it into the headline price are simply assuming an average and building it in. But it does mean the honest question to ask is never “how much is a headshot?” It’s “what do I pay to walk away with two finished images?”
To be direct about our own numbers: the $350 session fee covers the studio shoot only. Retouched images are not included in it. Most individuals booking a LinkedIn or corporate headshot leave with one or two finished files, so the realistic all-in cost of a single professional headshot with us is $400 to $450. We’d rather you read that here than discover it at checkout.
Vancouver headshot prices by tier
Budget: $125–$200
Quick-turnaround sessions, often 10–15 minutes with a set lighting setup and a fixed number of shots. You typically get files with light or no retouching. These are a reasonable choice when you need something presentable this week and the photo is not doing heavy lifting for your career. The trade-off is time: with a compressed session there is little room for coaching, second looks, or working past the stiffness most of us bring to the first ten minutes in front of a camera.
Mid-range: $300–$500
This is where most corporate, legal, finance and LinkedIn headshots in Vancouver land. Expect a 30-minute session, real posing guidance, multiple looks, and professional retouching on your selected images. Our own $350 session sits here: we shoot fully tethered, which means every frame appears full-size on a monitor as it is taken, and you leave having already chosen your favourites rather than waiting on a gallery.
Premium and personal branding: $800–$2,000+
Half-day or full-day shoots with concept planning, multiple outfits and locations, and a large delivered library. These make sense for founders, speakers and consultants who need a year of content — website hero images, press photos, social banners — not just one portrait. Our personal branding sessions are $1,500.
What actually drives the price
- Session length. More time means more looks, more coaching, and better odds of a frame you love. This is the biggest single cost driver.
- Retouching. Some studios bundle 1–3 edited images; others (including us) price the session and retouching separately at $50 per image, so you only pay for images you keep.
- Studio vs. on-location. Bringing lighting to your office adds setup time and travel. For teams this is usually worth it — see our corporate headshots page for how on-site team sessions work.
- Hair and makeup. Add $100–$250 if a professional artist is on set.
- Usage. Commercial and advertising usage is priced differently from a personal LinkedIn photo at some studios. Ask before you book.
How to compare two quotes properly
Put both quotes in the same shape: total cost for the session plus the number of final retouched images you will actually use. A “$200” session that includes zero edits and charges $75 per image can end up costing more than a $350 session with $50 edits. Also ask how selection works — choosing your images live at the session, the way tethered shooting allows, saves the days of back-and-forth that gallery-based studios build into their price.
Hidden fees worth asking about
Before you book anywhere, ask these five questions. The answers are the actual price.
- Are retouched images included, or billed per image?
- What do additional images cost?
- Do I get commercial usage rights, or a licence with limits?
- Are there travel fees for shooting at my office?
- What’s the turnaround, and is there a rush charge?
Usage rights are the one people forget. A headshot you can’t put on your company website is not a business headshot, whatever it cost.
Business portraits and team pricing
Corporate work prices differently. Once a company is booking eight or more people, most photographers move off the per-session rate and quote a half or full day, because the setup cost is fixed and the marginal cost of each additional person is small.
The thing worth paying attention to on a team booking isn’t the per-head price — it’s consistency. Matching lighting, background and crop across the whole leadership page is what makes a company look deliberate rather than assembled. That’s a scheduling and process question more than a money one, and it’s worth asking how a studio handles staff who miss the shoot day. Our team headshots page covers how we run multi-person days.
Are cheap headshots or AI headshots worth it?
If budget is the only constraint, a $125 session beats a selfie. But before choosing between a discount shoot and an app, read our honest comparison of AI headshots vs. a real photographer — the short version is that AI output still fails in ways that are obvious to recruiters and casting directors, and a mid-range human session costs less than most people assume.

If you’re a photographer setting your own headshots pricing
A large share of the people searching this term are photographers, not clients — so, briefly.
How much should you charge for a two-hour shoot? Price the deliverable, not the hour. A two-hour session that yields ten retouched images carries roughly a full day of work once editing is done. If your hourly maths doesn’t account for post processing, you’re paying yourself to edit.
How many photos come out of a two-hour shoot? You’ll take several hundred. You’ll cull to perhaps 40 that are technically clean, and deliver somewhere between 10 and 20. Delivering more isn’t generosity; it pushes the choice onto the client, and they’re worse at it than you are.
How much for 100 edited photos? Nobody should be quoting a flat rate for 100 finished images without knowing the retouching standard. At even light retouching, that’s days of work. This is the volume where most photographers outsource editing — and where you need to have decided whether outsourcing is a margin decision or a quality one.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I expect to pay for a LinkedIn headshot in Vancouver?
Between $300 and $450 for a session with professional retouching. See our LinkedIn headshots page for what a session includes.
How much do actor headshots cost in Vancouver?
Actor sessions tend to run $350–$700 because they involve multiple looks and agency-spec crops. Our actor headshots page covers what casting directors in the Vancouver market expect.
Why do studios charge separately for retouching?
It keeps the session price honest. Bundled “free” edits are priced into the package whether you use them or not; separate retouching means a person who needs one image pays less than a team lead who needs ten.
Is it worth paying for a professional headshot?
If people find you through LinkedIn, a firm directory, a real-estate listing or a casting portal, your photo is doing sales work every day. A $350 session amortized over three years costs less than a coffee a month.
